The EOS 50D is Canon’s upgrade from the EOS 40D.   Instead of just making changes and upgrades to the 40D, Canon built this camera from the ground up.  Like the 40D, this camera has a 3 inch LCD monitor but the 50D’s screen has 920K dots compared to the 230K on the 40D.  The 50D features an APS-C 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 Image Processor, a significant improvement over the 40D.  This improved sensor results in improved fine detail and excellent color reproduction as well as improved ISO capabilities up to 3200.

The 50D also has Peripheral Illumination Correction that corrects for lens vignetting in the camera instead of having to make the corrections in post processing.  The 50D has a live view function with optional remote live view and a face detection featire in live view mode.  Built in flash and 9 point auto focus sensor and sensor cleaning are also features included.

The reviewer is a long time Canon camera user and upgraded from the 40D to the 50D so is a user as well as a tester of the equipment.
