Shoot HD video

Only recently have manufacturers started making DSLRs that shoot video. Most new DSLRs shoot 720p or 1080p HD video. Shooting video with a DSLR is usually not as simple/easy as with a regular digital camera, but the results can look incredible, especially with wide aperture lenses.

I have both. I use D5100 for videos and D90 for photos.

D90 is much faster in taking photos (great if your covering events).
D90 is better in low light.
D5100 has more vibrant colors when taking photos.
D5100 if you're going to shoot a lot of videos, that flip out out screen really do wonders.

Really depends on what you're going to do with it..

In case that it's not too late I would say that the D5100 is perfect for
video making because that can record 1080p footage while the D90 can
just in 720p and a maximum of 5 minutes.

I didn't owned one..but from product comparison, I prefer D90 because of its compatibility to older AF lense. AF-S lense much more expensive...
