Mirrorless-IL (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens) digital cameras are often viewed as a compromise between a digicam and an SLR. Like a DSLR they have interchangeable lenses and like digicams they are mirrorless setups and thus allow much smaller sizes. If the versatility of interchangeable lenses and quality of a large sensor appeal to you but you find your DSLR is just too big to take with you all the time these can be a great alternative.

Snapsort puts all interchangable-lens cameras that are not SLRs (don't have through-the-lens optical viewfinders) into the mirrorless category. This includes micro-four-thirds cameras from Panasonic and Olympus, as well as rangefinder cameras from Leica and what are commonly called electronic viewfinder interchangeable-lens (EVIL) cameras from Sony and other manufacturers.
