Flip out and swivel LCD
photo of the Olympus E-620SLR with flip and swivel screen The Olympus E-620 provides a flip out and swivel LCD.

Flip out LCDs permit the LCD display screen at the camera back to flip away from the camera to be seen at different angles, while some only tilt up many will flip-out and swivel as shown in the picture to the right. Although much less popular than before these flip-out screens are extremely useful. With a normal camera if you eye is not pressed up to the viewfinder or LCD is not directly in front of you it becomes difficult to impossible to compose a shot. For instance when taking a photo of yourself and a friend the LCD can be swivelled 180 degrees to face you allowing you to see what the photo will look like. When using a tripod the LCD can be tilted up to make it easy to compose the shot without constantly bending down to see the screen. Raising the camera above you to get a birds eye style view is made easy by tilting the down. Shooting movies is also much nicer on these cameras allowing you to steady the camera at any position and still see what your recording. Snapsort likes this feature a lot, its unfortunate its not available in more cameras.

The D5100 has a good solid screen, it is not going to be broken with normal usage, but with a flip out screen you do run the risk of breaking it off if it is banged or dropped. That risk applies to all flip out screens.

How is the build quality of the flip out screen of Nikon D5100 ? Can it be broken if i use it regularly ?
