These cameras are in a category of their own. They have fixed lenses, but are similar size to and have large sensors like mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. They typically are expensive, and have minimalist features and designs, for example many have no zoom at all which is very uncommon in fixed-lens cameras.
What really separates them from most digicams is the sensor size. Most boutiques have a sensor at least 20mm x 14mm big, which is over 11 times bigger than the standard 6mm x 4mm sensor that 95% of digicams. These larger sensors usually give much better image quality especially at high ISO which is useful in low light situation.
