The more info I read, the more confused I became BUT, I think, right now, the Canon 310 HS is my choice.  8x zoom is plenty; they are equal in the macro shooting, image stabilization, HD 1080p, great low light quality photos, categories; the 3 inch screen on the 310 is fine...don't need 3.2 inch touch screen on the 510; actually, I prefer the buttons to the touch screen...not liking the idea viewing my images via fingerprint smudged touch screen. I like that the 310 can shoot a few more photos per charge than the 510. Not much difference in weight and size.  The 310 is a little less expensive - always a good thing.  Too bad there's no 3D photos and geo-tagging support.  It would have been nice if there was built in photo stitch and HDR capabilities, but as pointed out, these can be done post processing.  Thanks of this awesome comparison - it really helped me make my decision to go with the 310 HS.
