They're two very different cameras. I'd recommend you got for an entry level DSLR like the 1000D if you want to learn about photography, if image quality is important to you, and if you have the $ to spend on a few lenses.
I'd recommend a pro digicam like the P7000 if ease and convenience is important to you. The P7000 will be much easier to bring with you, especially if you had more than one lens for the 1000D. However, the P7000 won't get nearly as good image quality as the 1000D, mostly because its sensor is 7x smaller.
In both the models, the JPEGs continious spped is same i.e. 3fps.
