Sony specializes in everything, soup to nuts, its prowess as a semi-conductor manufacturer allows them to design the image sensor that go in both their and other manufacturers cameras. Sony tends to focus on proprietary systems in its cameras having developed its own lens mounts, memory card format and image sensors.
