Once the site of a Longobard fortification, of which nothing remains, this castle became very important in the XII century, when it became the seat of the powerful Ricasoli family, to whom it still belongs. It is situated in the Chianti zone, in the border between the Florentine and Sienese lands. This castle was almost always in the Florentine domain, and was fortified with bastions in stone, still in perfect state. The walls enclose the remains of the old medieval castle, as well as a grandiose neo-gothic villa in red brick, built in the XIX century. The castle is surrounded by vineyards which have produced, since 1141, the famous wine that bears its name.
