It's a great camera for beginners, the panorama, movie, and zoom capabilities can be useful, but even though I am a beginner, I've found that it's not for me, I just want to take good pictures on the manual, aperture, or shutter priority modes, and this camera can be good, but a lot of my pictures have turned out grainy at ISO's 400 and over, I even struggle at 200 sometimes. I recommend this camera for people who want to use the features and the zoom and so on, but it didn't work for me.

We
bought our Fujifim Finepix HS20 EXR camera back in September 2011,
online from Hong Kong (we're in Australia) and it was working great
for only just over a month!! We then started having the same
problems, overheating, freezing etc and just couldn't understand why
it was happening. We changed the batteries and memory card and still
the problems occurred. I emailed the company we bought in from, based
in Hong Kong and I sent the camera back to them explaining the
problems. They have had the camera for about a month now and I have
just received an email today (9 Feb 2012) basically stating their
warranty policy and to please pay $43.80 shipping as they couldn't
find any problems (so user has to pay shipping) with the camera after
FujiFilm have carried out their testing!!! In their previous email to
me, they asked whether the problem was with my memory card which I
think is strange and do not believe that is where the problem lies. I
am in the process of emailing them back saying I'm not paying the
$43.80 shipping and told them about this Firmware upgrade etc and
that others are experiencing the same problems. I am just so
unbelievably frustrated as I like the camera and just want it to
work!!!!!!  I am so thankful I found this site and relived that
it's not just happening to me, that this problem is occurring to
others well!! I'm going to fight them on this and will keep you
posted!!

Hey Bosse

You are correct the HS20 can shoot up to 11 frames per seconds but the resolution drops in half. It can only shoot 8 fps at full resolution, which is what we count. As for megapixels Snapsort uses true resolution which is based on the size of the sensor and not the artificially high numbers that marketers use.

Bosse (1:39 PM, January 03, 2012)
The specs are wrong.. it's 11 fps and 16 mp. Please fix this.

Where did u get the camera ? This freezing problem, as far as i surfed is because of the over heating.
what is your firmware version ? I heard that the latest firmware has solved this problem.
i met a friend of my dad who own this camera and discussed reg the freezing and over heating issues. He said he too had it when he got it 3 months back and when he updated the firmware, it was gone.
Try taking it to fujifilm to update ur firmware. Might solve the problem.

I'm planning to buy this camera later this month. I was thinking that this issue is solved in the latest releases and from ur case if it still has the latest firmware, then that issue still prevails ! :-/

Just got my new Fuji HS20 EXR but within a shot or two camera freezes and won't let to untill you take out batteries. When you take out and put it starts right up but then freezes on the next shot. Can anyone tell me what's up, is it me or the equipment?

a begginer (3:13 PM, November 10, 2011)
what is the best mode to take pictures from this camera??? i need suggestions....

Onusopus (0:09 PM, October 20, 2011)
Is this heating and freezing problem resolved in the more recent cameras ? and are the new ones coming with the latest firmware ? any idea ? i'm planning to buy one by the end of next month and i'm quite impressed with this cam. on surfing for reviews, i find almost every site with 3-5 ppl atleast complaining abt this over heating and freezing of the camera. General view i get is that this is a great cam but for 3 things.  1 - over heating 2 - Freezes at times 3 - auto focus isn't that good.

please let me know if atleast this heating and freezing issue is resolved in the recent cameras !

We bought this camera after much research into the best Bridge camera. We were not impressed by the pixelation on close inspection, the camera's inability to focus on macro subjects (such as spiders' in webs or dragonflies in grass) - the focusing jumped around so much that the subject was lost. Auto-focus on moving subjects was dreadful. In short, after 3 weeks we got rid! Dr D's comments below really are spot on!

The HS20 is perfect for a backup camera. My normal camera is a Nikon D3X and I actually enjoy shooting with the Fuji a bit more. No massive array of lenses and flashes to carry around, and when it brakes or falls into a waterfall, no problem, it only cost 399.99!! I'm extremely pleased with it (on my 4th one now...) and I reccomend it for anyone trying to get into photography.

Hi, I have the HS20EXR with the latest firmware v1.03, SD8Gb class 10 card, new SONY NiMH 2300mA, no problem with freezing under any condition, did several movies short and long ones, only problem is that it can't refocus or find the right new white balance if you change the zoom too much while filming but I found a workaround just take a picture while filming and it will continue with the right focus etc. It's a great camera certainly better than the rest of the mega-zooms (I've tried many before buying this camera).  To know which firmware you have turn on the camera while pressing the "back" button. Don't be afraid of making the upgrade to the new firmware, follow Fujifilm site instructions, copy the the file to your SD card, make sure the batteries are fully charged, don't touch any button during the upgrade process.  To get best quality pictures use any of the manual modes, P mode is the easiest for beginners, prefer 8MP instead of 16MP, the latest is only better if ISO can be set at 100.
Set sharpness to SOFT and noise reduction to STD, under expose about -2/3 with the (+/-) button this gives better detail overall, don use continuous focus for pictures or movies to keep your batteries running for longer.  The HS20EXR camera is perfect for users that want to experiment with several options and learn if you just want to use the AUTO or SCENE modes at most then buy a NIKON P500 or a PANASONIC FZ150. HS20EXR is a little better than the HS10 but if you already have a HS10 is not worth upgrading,  wait for the HS30EXR if we are in luck Fuji guys could use the newly developed larger 12MP sensor of the X10 camera and maybe include a fully articulated screen, that would be really cool !  Hope I have answered most of your doubts.

Hello.
I'm having the same problems with lock-up / freezing.
If there is somekind of web-page then please post a link. I beleve that this is manufacturing fault.
From what I read on web, there is somekind of a problem with owerheating CPU. I guess thet this fault was showing with firmware v 1.00. Overheat icom. I don't have FW v 1.00. My camera had FW 1.03. I think that newer FW have just higher point of critical temperature. That's why I dont have overheat icon appear on my LCD. It simly freeze.

So, if there is somekind of web-page where we can pursuade FUJI that this is their fault, please post a link.

Hello.

I just got my Fuji HS20 EXR from simplyelectronics.net.
I'm having the same problems with lock-up / freezing.
Unfortunately I haven't read about this problem before....
Has somebody found some solution?
Is there some web page to make Fuji admit that this is serial mistake made by Fuji?

Are we still having the freezing problem?  Is there any solution?  I bought a new HS20 and now worried...I am expecting the device to reach me in 2days...  I am India and bought it from US through a friend of mine.

Gzelna (1:57 PM, August 29, 2011)
My Fuji HS 20 , purchased from Amazon (in the US) about 6 weeks ago is now doing this 'locking up' thing where the only way to reset it is to open the battery cover and basically 'reset' the camera. I have not checked what firmware version my camera has. I am not sure of the temperature icon has come on prior to its lockign up, or not. Unfortunately I am outside the Amazon 30 day return period, so I cannot return it (or I would, immediately) so I will have to pursue fixes via the manufacturer.
