I actually am trying both this camera vs the Nikon s8100. While I would enjoy having 1080 hd in the Canon I do enjoy the hd video in the Canon, I find that it out performs the nikon on almost every other front. I love the Nikon form factor. Zoom button, flash etc, but at the end of the day it is what truly gives the best product. I love shooting video and the canon captures low light better but with noise. I cannot get the Nikon to even come close. Even using the limited night shot settings for the Nikon, no luck. To date as stated the Canon is in the lead regarding photo and video quality. Please note that I currently own a Nikon D90 (love it), and an older Canon S3IS (Love it too). I guess I am looking for the sweet-spot in a pocket digital that gives the balance. Honestly the old Canon S3is gives better video (VGA 640) that either the 210 or the 8100. Now I know the sensor and glass in the S3 are huge but for a 6 MP camera the photos are pretty sweet as well. So pack the Canon S3IS into a pocket camera form factor give it 720 hd video and I would be very happy.

What's the optimal megapixels in this camera to obtain true resolution?

It showing true resolution, not the rating of the sensor. You can click on the spec sheet and see that it is rated at 14 mega pixels, but we don't value the manufacturers rated amount, if you read our overview of true resolution: http://snapsort.com/learn/sensor/true-resolution you'll see that its that what the manufacturers tell you isn't really worth much on a digicam. The sensor size is really the biggest factor in these small cameras. With the Canon you're really just using up extra memory space not actually capturing more detail.

Comparison to the Panasonic Lumix Zs7 shows both cameras with 9.8 mega pixel image capabilities. THIS IS INCORRECT! The Canon SX210 IS is actually a 14.1 mega pixel camera!!! Big difference. Don't know how this would have changed the outcome but it this info should be updated to be fair.
